Andrew Smith MP has joined the NUS' campaign to improve postgrad funding.
The 'Postgraduate Champion' campaign follows an NUS report last year called 'Steps toward a fairer system of postgraduate taught funding', which proposed a government-backed loan scheme for postgraduate students.
Andrew recently met with Chris Gray, Oxford University Students Union VP for Graduates, to discuss this.
Andrew said: "The wellbeing of students in Oxford has always been important to me and it is because of this that I am proud to be a 'Postgraduate Champion'. The current situation in postgraduate funding cannot be ignored any longer as many young people are already being excluded from study simply because of their wealth. It is crucial that everyone, regardless of means is enabled to make the most of their potential. We also desperately need to enhance our skills and knowledge base if we are to compete in the global economy."
Chris Gray added: "We are very grateful for Andrew's support on postgraduate funding, an issue which is incredibly important for students right now. Andrew is always keen to hear our concerns, both national and local, and has consistently done his best to represent the large number of students in his constituency. We are optimistic that with his support, and the support of others like him across the country, we will be able to push for government action on an obstacle to social mobility and to future economic growth."
