Andrew Smith MP has signed the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition's Rio-UK Declaration.
The United Nations' Rio+20 Earth Summit is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, 20 years on from the original, groundbreaking Rio Earth Summit. One of the key themes at the conference is the move to a green and fair economy.
Andrew said: "I am proud to have signed the Rio-UK Declaration. I strongly support this campaign and am extremely concerned about the Tory / Lib-Dem Government's stance, which seems to assume that the best way to protect the world's ecosystems is to create a market in biodiversity.
"I believe that we need the united action of the world's Governments, especially those of developed nations, to ensure that the rapid major reduction in carbon emissions that is necessary happens, and to ensure that developing nations are helped to develop their economies sustainably. This cannot be done entirely through markets as market solutions have not in the past achieved what has been hoped, and cannot achieve what is needed.
"It is possible to create a world where nobody starves or is forced to live in abject poverty, either for economic or for environmental reasons".
