Andrew Smith MP has today defended Oxfam’s ‘Below the Breadline’ campaign following a complaint submitted by Conor Burns MP to the Charity Commission.
Andrew said: "Oxfam has a responsibility to challenge poverty - in this country as well as overseas. The report underpinning this campaign was produced jointly by Church Action on Poverty and The Trussell Trust along with Oxfam. It shows a number of factors contributing to food poverty, including the more punitive benefits sanctions regime, a lack of decent work in many areas and rising living costs. Lots of politicians around the world would like to suppress Oxfam's work. I hope Oxfam will continue to be brave, both in tackling the consequences of poverty, wherever it is evident, and its causes. As a charity, it is right that they are not party political, but that mustn't stop them spelling out the facts on poverty, however uncomfortable this particular Conservative MP finds it."
