Andrew Smith MP met with Oxford University students as part of the NUS' lobby on Higher Education funding.
Andrew said: "I am very concerned at the scale of the additional costs that students face and the further financial pressure that this puts on our students. I support the NUS' call for the government to 'Come Clean' on hidden course costs, funding for bursaries, and postgraduate funding.
"I fully support the call by the NUS for all universities and colleges to commit to full transparency prior to application on all course costs, commit to absorb essential costs within the tuition fee, and to offer means tested support for non-essentials".
Martha Mackenzie, President of Oxford University Students Union, said: "I was pleased to be able to bring a group of student leaders to meet Andrew Smith MP as part of the NUS 'Come Clean' lobby on changes to Higher Education. We had a lively discussion on issues ranging from undergraduate access, through to postgraduate funding, and visa restrictions. Andrew was open, honest, and incredibly insightful throughout and pledged to follow up on a number of our concerns. The students left feeling uplifted and delighted that a politician had been so responsive and genuinely listened.
Matt Cook, a student at Oxford Brookes University, added: "I was delighted to hear that my local MP, Andrew Smith, is supporting the NUS's call for the coalition government to 'Come Clean' on hidden university costs. Students in Oxford are lucky to have such a fantastic local MP who stands up for students.
